Our fascination for Abroad!

I was in one of the very posh area(I learnt) of the capital and was mesmerised by clean streets, high-end cars and huge bungalows. I saw few like me taking pictures of the area given the high status of its residents. But it felt bit lifeless. Many of us believe that anything and everything abroad is amazingly stylish and much better than where we are today. Like others, I go through the same trajectory of having a glittering idea and then witnessing the reality. I am acutely aware it's a privilege to have an opportunity to travel, live, and experience a different life in another country. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity and appreciate millions of others who travel far and wide for work or pleasure. However, through my travel experiences, I realized that social media and those influenced by it give undue importance or exaggerate things. Either to increase their fan following or to make others feel down upon. We all know that all that glitters is not gold. However, we should know what is gold first.

I have seen numerous times how enthusiastic tourists line up to click a selfie or photo in a particular place that had gone viral on media, plainly ignoring the beauty and reality of the place. The curated image of abroad leads to a false perception that life outside is better. However, we all know that is not the case, even without stepping a foot outside of your door.

We all observe or experience that people can go to extreme limits on social media to prove that anything abroad is better. The allure created only benefits a few individuals and industries. I feel it creates a false hope for many who have access to technology and media but lack the sensibilities. The irony of humans is the grass looks green on the other side. I understand sometimes, it is ok to boast about life's successes or luxuries but with an awareness that others are not as privileged.

No doubt, there are many perks in well-developed countries, like excellent roads, transport, facilities, access to equal education, etc., but it all comes with taxes and high prices. World over, many cities are spotless and organized, with clear roads and clean rivers. But it is to credit the people staying there and contributing their part to keep the place in good shape.

I feel our notion that once we move abroad, all will be amazing is slightly misplaced. Financially, many countries offer a lucrative deal. However, we need to take it with a heavy pinch of taxes and expenses. Food, climate, culture, individual lifestyle, and goals play roles in understanding if abroad is as good as perceived. Every place has its pros and cons. It all depends on where and how we want to adjust to make the visit or living happy and memorable.

I am troubled when people living abroad boast their status to less privileged people. We tend to forget quickly that it only takes hard work and the right opportunity for anyone to rise and shine in life. So, how can we look down upon someone? I feel we need a bit of conditioning to behave well and appreciate those who have worked hard all their way up the social ladder, irrespective of the place or circumstances they were born or raised. I know our fascination for abroad will continue for long. But we should be mindful of the reality and not rely on the curated snapshot of it.
